The 3,000 square-foot penthouse, in the Williamsburg Savings Bank, is designed in a manner to take full advantage of the views and provide a flexible internal landscape within which the owner can adapt the built elements to suit her changing needs. The internal distribution of spaces is relatively open and highly flexible within the solid masonry enclosure of the apartment shell. We distinguish between the “movable” and the “immovable” elements within the apartment; seeing the versatile and finely-tuned millwork and furniture as sculptural counterpoints to the crisp, fixed enclosure of the apartment. The materiality and detailing of these “movable” elements provide a sense of tactility, psychological warmth and human scale within the residence.
